I could be wrong, but it seems like the majority of members here are under 21. Which makes me wonder........how'd all you guys FIRST get into U2?

I got in on the tail end of them being "cool".........my older friends all jumped on the bandwagon circa Joshua Tree........like the vast majority of U2 fans. Among people I actually know I'm the youngest U2 fan I know. I've always been refered to as "the baby". :)

My younger brother who is 23 is always telling me how "old" U2 is......our dad even listens to them!

So how does someone who was a toddler when JT came out come to like U2? How do you get into them, especially when the "cool" stuff is indie or emo or whatnot?

(This isnt' meant as an insult........I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the fact that so many different kinds of people like U2 as much as I do!)

Well, I'm 16 now, and what a great age...but after the Elevation tour came and passed...my mom (not a U2 fan) bought ATYCLB because she liked Beautiful Day. I never really listened to any music before and therefore had no CD collection, so I listed to that good 'ol U2 album...and liked it! Then my dad, for some reason, (not a big U2 fan either,) bought Best of 1980-1990...and I realized that I knew most of the songs and just never knew the group!

That got me excited! I owned two CDs by a band and liked them both! I don't remember the order of the albums I bought next...but I got them all eventually and everything just accelerated and now I'm a true U2 fan!

I'm 20, but I got into U2 when I was but a little one...

My older brother bought the Joshua Tree when I was in 2nd grade (that would have made me about 7 years old at the time). He used to play it all the time in his room and I used to play with my toys in my doorway so I could hear better. I thought the music was great and I fell in love with them right away.
I didn't really appreciate them until I got older, though. I mean I really liked their music throughout elementary school and into middle school, but it was only when I reached high school that I began researching the band more and collecting all their albums, singles and videos.
Since then I've been a hardcore fan who hasn't had the honor of seeing them live yet but will make it her business to do so next year ;)

i'm 23 (so on the youngish side), and i distinctly remember hearing Discotheque on the radio when it came out, and thinking "what the hell is this trash?" i saw Popmart stuff on the news and decided that U2 were the biggest bunch of pretentious bastards i'd ever heard of.

then ATYCLB came out, and my dad bought it for me as a going-off-to-college thing in January of '01. i listened once, was not impressed, and put it away until about March. relistened. flipped out. downloaded everything i could get my hands on (this was still in the days of Napster). saw them in May (Milwaukee) and then October (Chicago). and the rest is obsessive fannish history. (and now i like Discotheque.)

I just turned 21 this past week.

I became a U2 fan my senior year in high school....after seeing them at the Super Bowl, hearing about the Elevation concerts, and reading "Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2." After I read that book, I went out and bought all of their albums......Loved them ever since, and they are by far my favorite group. No other band even comes close.

It was in 2000 when I bought ATYCLB and I LOVED it. So I borrowed Joshua Tree from a friend and loved that, too. I downloaded more older songs from them, bought Achtung Baby from the 'Net, my ex-girlfriend bought me War and Best of 1980-90 for my birthday a few years back and I bought the 2nd Best Of two years ago. Now I'm eagerly awaiting HTDAAB!!!

I have always liked U2 thanks to my uncle. He's always listening to U2, although he's not a hardcore fan. I was raised listening to the most popular songs (WOWY, NYD, Pride, SBS). But I acknowledged who they were when I was 9. I was watching MTV with my mom when the Sweetest Thing video came on and gee, I feel in love with them! Then I looked up more stuff about them and became the huge U2 fan that I am. I'm 15, btw.

I'm 23 (going to be 24 in about 2.5 mos.), but didn't get into U2 until about 2000 (when 'Beautiful Day' came out as a single). But in my case, I was brought up almost exclusively on classical music as a child (modern music was practically forbidden to me, so I only really started listening (secretly) and getting into non-classical music when I was about 11...). And afterwards, I just liked a variety of artists, but I still listened to classical stations almost all of the time (I basically went on recommendations from friends when checking out new music), so in other words, I had actually never even heard of the band U2 until about 2000. I'm not sure when exactly was the first time I heard them - was probably a music video first, and then after they won the Grammys I really started paying attention. It probably also helped that I was at the time becoming good friends at the time with a true U2 addict. So then I started to check out more of their music, and the more I heard, the more I fell in love... To be honest, several of their songs got me through some very tough times in the last few years (and they still do).

I think it's amazing how current they are, especially when you consider that they're being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (did I get the name right?) for their 25 years as a band. I mean, the Rolling Stones (for example) were huge in their day, but they're not exactly 'current' anymore... Most of their fans are of a distinctly older generation.

TOTALLY! Thats why I was thinking about this.......I mean, apparently, they are still with it enough to get fans all the time, and not just for the nostalgia factor. I mean, I love Dylan and the Beatles but its definitely not the same as U2.

I'm 22.

Have liked The Band since I heard "With or Without You" on the radio when I was eleven years old. Got Joshua Tree, but didn't really pay attention to any of the other songs on the album at that time.

I liked them, but didn't get INTO them until I bought Achtung Baby when I was fourteen. My young mind was blown. I got the ZooTV and Rattle&Hum VHS-tapes and became obsessed. Went and bought (or rather, made my parents buy me) everything they'd released to that point.

Then POP came out that year, and I was a total goner - had one of those revolutionary life-changing moments the first time I listened to "If God Will Send His Angels" - begged my mother to let me see them at the Tempe PopMart show, and knew that they were going to be my band forever after that. I turned 15 a month later :) I went on to become "that weird U2 girl" at my high school.

I've since seen them live two more times (Elevation, of course - once inside The Heart and touching-distance from Bono, once just outside of it) and can't wait for this next tour :)

I'm seventeen and I grew up with U2. I was born two months before the release of the Joshua Tree, all of my family like the band, I grew up in New One Tree Hill land Zealand and everyone around me liked, respected, and admired U2 as the greatest band on earth ... I was destined to be a fanatic.

I'm 20 and I got into U2 because I was dragged to a Popmart concert by my Grandmother and then I became obsessed and have seen them 6 times..Bono sang to me once at one show. It seems like every time I see them on something/they release something new I get more and more obsessed until it's gotten out of control (haha) like it is now and I'm on the inside of the whole things. It's just weird. and I never liked anything cool in my life, so that helps I guess.

Whoah, if your parents had dragged you to a U2 concert, that would seem quite normal. But your Grandmother?!

She must be one very cool grandma :P

OOH Also if you're sampling this group for age you must remember that it is not an acurate sampling--LJ is more than 60% populated with those under 30...most regular U2 lists have an age ranged in the post 30s

I'm 19, and I didn't even so much grow up with them - my parents are not fans of 'modern music'. As a haven, I used to sneak into my brother's room and listen to his cassettes and later on his cds.

Then he moved out when I was about 7 or 8, so it pretty much stopped there, I just had all of these songs in my head with no idea who they were by or even what they were. Instead I'd go around to his house and steal cds. There was a huge argument when I'd stolen Achtung Baby. They hadn't made much of an impression, I didn't think then, until I was told that everyone was sick of me listening to the same stuff. Then we got my brother "The Best of" for his birthday, and he got me it for Christmas, and then slowly continued fuelling my habit.

Now I buy my own cds :D

And wow, I had no idea that I remembered all that.
