I thought Bloody Sunday (the one referred to in the song) occured at teh end of January (28th? 30th?) and was in 1971 (or 70? 73?)

The Bloody Sunday in the song did occur on January 30, 1972. However, there was a "Bloody Sunday" prior to that on November 21, 1920. The one which took place 84 years ago today was when Michael Collins, head of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, ordered the assassination of 14 high-ranking British intelligence officers. In retaliation,British auxiliaries opened fire at a Gaelic Football game.
No, it was not the event that triggered the song. However, it was another significant act of violence in the North.
