I was surfing around atu2.com today and found this line in Bono's bio:

"Fortunately, after the tour, he was admitted to the hospital to have the problem corrected and has since quit smoking, after doctors told him it would permanently damage his singing."

Is this true? Has Bono really quit smoking? I hadn't noticed! If he did, good for him!

Nope, Dr. Bono has since decided that smoking is fine... and he's started again. (Or did he ever really quit??!)

I hear him going on about how he has the voice of JT era, only stronger, and I feel like going "No, you don't, but maybe you would if you stopped SUCKING ON THOSE CANCER STICKS." Heh.

I personally feel that Bono's voice sounds amazing. regardless of the smoking, he sounds better than ever. His voice is so strong.

I disagree. I think he does sound great, but he could sound better. The current album has shown the strain he's putting on his voice by singing.

Yeah. It's a horrible and tragic habit... it upsets me to hear Bono defending what he does to his voice and health when he talks about how he likes "how his voice sounds now."

The logic of an addict...

I ♥ Bono but I don't ♥ smoking. Eew.

I want Bono (among others) around for a long, long time. Everyone needs a vice but I wish every smoker would quit :(

i don't think he ever really did (though he did try to cut back). i recall friends telling me that in oakland on the 3rd leg of elevation he told the crowd he'd smoked a pack the night before, all the while telling himself not to. he also likes to proclaim he's quit whilst holding a ciggy in hand. ;-P

I think he never really quited smoking... Or maybe he did, but then realized he could never have the Joshua Tree voice again and thought it wasn't worth it giving up. He must be drinking eggs and gargling!!
