Hello Hello!!

December 12th, 2004

Forgive me... @ 10:57 pm

_crimson_nails:
but I sincerely think that the line "is to fake it" in Sometimes really could have been done again. I mean, when they performed the song at the Brooklyn Bridge show he was able to reach that note and it sounded fine to me. I just think that on the album it sounds very bad. I almost cringe when I hear it.

Anyone else?

*EDIT* I love how whenever I post something no one ever agrees with me at all and I feel like an idiot/horrible fan. I think I'll just keep my mouth shut from now on.

*EDIT AGAIN* I'm such a drama queen. Everyone in this community is amazing.

that part of the song (the whole final chorus) is my favorite...i think it has a lot of character and feeling to it....and it's just beautiful the way it's sort of softly strained...i can see where you're coming from though.

my boyfriend, very non-fan boyfriend, and i were talking about it. he brought it up, i didn't really notice it. he says, in his opinion, it just shows how emotional that song was. i agree..

I think that the strain on the line "is to fake it" is absolutely wonderful. It's so heartbreaking because you know that he's giving it everything he's got. I'm glad it's not perfect. The imperfections of the song give it color and depth. I don't know about you, but I want don't want to hear a "perfect" rock band performance. There's no such thing as "perfect" in rock. When vocalists are always on key 100% of the time you start to wonder, am I listening to U2 or a computer? I see what you mean though in a way, but because the strain was on this particular song, I can't agree with you. I think it's brilliant.

Well said. Mariah Carey or Christian Aguilera are "perfect" vocalists. Bono is an emotive, moving vocalist. That matters so much more in my book by far.

Oh, don't feel bad! Opinions are just that -- opinions. You're not a horrible fan for not liking everything they do. I personally cannot STAND *all* of "Discoteque" and I know a lot of U2 fans think I'm crazy for that. I'm sorry if we made you feel that way. :( *hugs*

Don't worry about it - I'm one of the crazy fans who likes all of U2, which absolutely includes Zooropa. Nobody agrees with me on that.

1) I personally really like the emotion that comes out at a moment like that. While Bono tends to double track his vocals to perfection on most songs, that bit of vocal gymnastics that sounds so bare makes the song even more powerful for me.

2) Please do not stop asking whatever questions you want to bring up. This whole place is a forum for discussion on a topic and it's really hard to have any discussion without someone bringing up an idea. It might not wind up being agreed upon by the group as a whole but at least you had more balls to bring it up than all of the people that just sit on their hands and comment without ever posting one of their own thoughts.

don't feel like an idiot or horrible fan just because people don't agree with you. I agree with the comment above...keep bringing up questions/opinions.
personally, I like the 'fake it' part also...I can really imagine him thinking'singing about his dad and that song hits hard for me anyway, so it's emotional.

I think the 'unos dos tres catorce' thing from vertigo is pretty silly ;)

Your opinion is just as valid as anyone else's here. Not everyone is going to agree with everything you think, but it shouldn't keep you from sharing your thoughts.

People here tend to be pretty respectful, even when they don't see eye to eye. I wouldn't let it bug you.

I'm on the fence with this one. I noticed it straight away too, and I do tend to wish he had sung the line with a stronger voice... but at the same time I can forgive it quite easily because it does "make sense" within the emotional context of the song. (I haven't noticed any other strained-sounding bits on the album, so I've no idea what one of the other commenters was referring to?)

Re: people disagreeing with you, I'm sure nobody means to make you feel "wrong" or like you're a bad fan!  I do sympathise, I've become really frustrated on other web forums in the past when I've said "Does anyone agree?" and all I've had is unhelpful "No" responses, but I think it's just something you have to accept on here... people will often feel compelled to defend things they like when someone else criticises them. The trick is learning not to take it personally. :)  (I think some of us just have weird taste, too. *g*  I've often found I'm the only person in the world who sees things a certain way... I've learned to enjoy my uniqueness!!)

haha yeah, I've read that before. It made me very happy :)

I can see why it's his favorite, it's beautiful. And after fathering four children I'm sure it has a special meaning to him.
